Calico April 2012 trip report Print E-mail

The morning started off slow with everybody just hanging out. We organized a drivers meeting about 10am and the two groups headed off. Scuba lead the hard run up Odessa and down Doran. Johnnie and ShowStop hit up the scenic tour.

We started off by heading out Mule Canyon toward the power line road. We took a detour south to a parallel trail that follows some mines and tailing piles. From there we found a spot to get Johnnie stuck. In his defense, this was some soft sand and it was the only time the whole day he got stuck.
We drove out to the power line road, decided not to go all the way to the dry lake and instead headed up to the north valley area. There was a group of shooters camped out in the valley. They were shooting across the trail we were driving on (illegal). It took a few minutes before we could pass and we continued up to the overlook.
After that, we headed back down toward Tin Can Alley and then up to the top of Odessa Canyon. From there we went down to the Oregon Mine to do some exploring. After we got done with that, it timed out perfect for us to meet with the other group coming up Odessa. Got to watch them climb the waterfall ledge.

We had lunch near the Oregon mine where we stopped earlier to explore. After that, Johnnie and I headed north to the dry lake overlook, then over the Wall Street Canyon overlook, back up to the Bismarck mine, and eventually back down Philips Loop to camp. We arrived at camp just after 6pm. Johnnie headed home and we sat down for a nice quiet evening around the campfire.

We had a pretty large turnout for this event. About a dozen vehicles total. With such a large group we kept a moderate pace for the most part and didn't have too many hang ups. No major carnage to report, from the trail at least. Sparky popped a bead but thankfully Prospectator had a nitrogen tank and we got him up and running in no time. Bzag and Mikeybb tried to bulldoze a boulders with there front bumpers, needless to say both needed a lil love to get them straight again. Jay wasn't ready for it to be over and wanted one last money shot photo, he got just that, a busted radiator and tranny cooler. Thankfully he had AAA, and a spare radiator sitting in his garage. He's up and running again and already taking measurements for more protection. Here are a few pics from the trip-

Wrench-Tech II flyer

We had such a good turnout for last year's Wrench-Tech that we decided to bring it back to you in 2012! There will be new demonstrations such as Lower Ball Joint replacement, U-Joint maintenance, CB tech and more! This is a one-of-a-kind opportunity for So-Cal locals to get hands-on experience with maintenance and trail fixes for your truck. Our Staff is very knowledgeable on the topics we'll be covering throughout the day. Expect thorough explanations and bring all the questions you've been dying to ask about the demonstrated procedures.
Our sponsors, Demello Off-Road and Icon Vehicle Dynamics, have graciously donated their facilities, time and money to ensure this is a successful event. New and current products will be showcased and they'll be more than happy to answer all your questions.
The demos primarily focus on Tacoma models, but obviously much of what is shown easily crosses over to other models as well.
